Yamunotri  is one of the four Dhams of Uttarakhand and it is situated in Uttarkashi. Yamunotri is the source of the holy river Yamunotri dham is at an height of 10,804 ft above level in Himalayan range which is approximately 30 Km from main headquarter of its district Uttarkashi.
  The sacred shrine of Yamunotri, source of the river Yamuna, is the westernmost shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas.

 The main attraction of Yamunotri is the temple which is devoted to the Goddess Yamuna and the holy thermal springs at Janki Chatti.
The actual source, a frozen lake of ice and glacier (Champasar Glacier) situated on the Kalind Mountain at a height of 4,421 m above sea level, about 1 km further up from main Yamunotri, is not frequented generally as it is not accessible; hence the shrine has been located on the foot of the hill. Approach is extremely difficult so people offer pyar by themselves.
Yamunotri temple is on left side of River Yamuna and this was built-up by Maharaja Pratap Shah (Tehri Garhwal).
The idol of deity is made of black marble. The Yamuna, like the Ganga, has been elevated to the status of a divine mother for the Hindus and has been held responsible for nurturing and developing the Indian civilization.

Near of this temple are hot water springs gushing out from the mountain cavities. Surya Kund is the most important kund.  Divya Shila, is situated near Surya kund which is worshipped before puja is offered to People prepare Khichdi in muslin cloth like hanky, to offer at the shrine by dipping them in these hot water springs. Cooked rice get back as mahaprasad for home. Priest of Yamunotri come from the village Kharsali which is near Janki Chatti.


How to Reach Yamunotri

By Air : Nearest airport is Jolly Grant, Dehradun and than get bus or jeep for Yamunotri.

By Train : Railway connectivity only upto Rishikesh. After that you will have to get bus or private jeep.

By Road : The best route to visit Yamunotri is via Barkot. Just in case you are coming from Haridwar-Rishikesh then the road to Yamunotri diverts from Dharasu bifurcation point.
