Gangotri Dham

                         Gangotri Dham

Gangotri is a small and famous town in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. This is a famous temple of ma Ganga and one of the Char Dhams of choti Char Dhams Yatra which is situated on the bank of Bhagirathi which is the first name of ma Ganga.
Gangotri is situated in Himalayan range at 3100 metres above sea level.
As per the Hindusim and great legends, this is the place where Goddess Ganga descended when Lord Shiva released her from his locks.
As we know the temple was built by  Nepese general Amar Singh Thapa. At this place Ganga is called Bhagirathi and it gets name Ganga from Devprayag when it meets to Alaknanda.
The origin of Ganga is at Gaumukh, set at the Gangotri Glacier, and this is 19 away from Gangotri. As like other Dhams it remains open only for 6 months it closed on the day of Diwali and opens on Akshay tritya, in this time the statue of mata Ganga. Kept at Mukhba village which is near Harshil. Head priest of this Temple is from Semwal family and they offer ritual duties.
